EDITORIALThe development of innovative goals and strategies for research encompasses creativity. Like artists, scientists follow the path of creativity while their projects unfold, moving through four phases, which the American School of creative writing called Preparation - Incubation - Illumination or Inspiration - Elaboration and Verification. The shared path of creativity opens up an opportunity for artists familiar with these processes to collaborate in research projects. Their lack of scientific knowledge doesn't need to be a handicap, as the increasing number of successful collaborations between art and science shows. Many artists are learned specialists in tackling any theoretic field or subject with a sense of playfulness - pivotal for the creative phase of Incubation. Play opens new perspectives and shapes outdated strategies into an exciting stage for innovative research. It was a matter of luck that PIGVISION was invited to develop a new research project in an environment which has given away to decay. The stage is a secret piggery built into the cellar of a large Swiss farm house during the Second World War. It was abandoned long ago, and one last light bulb throws a pale light on cracked plant pots, empty wooden cases and dusty compartition walls of former pig boxes. Green moss grows in the window shafts. Not a place for pigs anymore, but optimal conditions for PIGVISION to develop a new research program, called 'hidden lines / secret piggery'. The program will shine light on the significance of linear phenomena in art/science collaborations. Work is well under way to document the project on the world wide web. The first photographs will be launched with the next bulletin in November. Raymond Rohner
WHAT'S NEW:Red light for art project PORCONTROLIt took the artist Christo more than twenty years to plan for the wrapping of the Reichtag's building in Berlin. This may indicate how long it takes until the relevant authorities give the green light for public art projects.PORCONTROL, however, proceeds step by step towards the red phase of a traffic light in Europe, which will be triggered by Australian pigs via the internet. The next stage is the construction of an electronic traffic light modell. PIGVISION's business address in Australia remains as it is. The new address is:PIGVISION, La Ferme sur le Brand, CH-2610 Mont Soleil, Switzerland. Tel./Fax. 032 941 10 46
